How to generate sitemap XML

First of all why websites need sitemaps?
Because they make Google’s life easier, and if you help Google, Google will help you too
Website sitemap is a file that tells Google bots when your website was last updated, what is the exact website structure and how frequently your website is updated. Having website sitemap let’s your website get scanned by Google bots once you do the change, instead of waiting for the next week or month to scan your website.
So here are simple steps to get your sitemap up and running. These instructions are for those who run WordPress. If you don’t run WordPress, then you should get your website in WordPress immediately!
- Step #1: Go to Plugins -> Add New in your admin area
- Step #2: Enter “Google XML Sitemaps” and once you see it, click Install
- Step #3: Activate your plugin
- Step #4: Go to General -> “XML Sitemap“, it will read:
The sitemap wasn’t built yet. Click here to build it the first time. - Step #5: Generate Sitemap
- Step #6: It will now read something like:
Your sitemap was last built on April 25, 2011 2:56 am.
You can click on a sitemap to see your sitemap. You can of course tweak it the way you want by tweaking the plugin settings. - Step #7: Login to your Gmail or Google account and then go to Google Webmaster Tools – this should be one of your best friends from now on: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/
- Step #8: Click on Add a website and enter your website name
- Step #9: Verify your website by downloading and uploading to your website a file that Google uses to verify you as an owner.
- Step #10: Click on your website name, go to Site Configuration -> Sitemaps and click on Submit a sitemap.
- Step #11: Enter: sitemap.xml and click submit.
That’s it! It will improve your website positions and will help Google to index your website better!
